Where Profit Meets Purpose
The NGO Funding Crisis Is Structural. So Is the Solution.
I spent 15 years building organizations that advance missions. For the past two years, I have been focused on one question: how do NGOs build revenue that doesn't depend on grants?
What This Looks Like in Practice
When I became Executive Director of the G4 Alliance in October 2023, the organization had never had a single corporate member and faced serious resource constraints. Within seven months, I designed a new revenue framework, won over a skeptical membership, and welcomed the organization's first corporate partner — Butterfly Network — whose mission aligned directly with G4's advocacy for surgical access worldwide.
By August 2024, the G4 Alliance had signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding with the World Health Organization. Revenue grew 24% year-over-year.
This did not happen by accident. It happened because I treated a funding crisis as a strategic opportunity and built the internal permission structure to act on it.

Lessons learned as Executive Director of the G4 Alliance

Since Leaving the G4 Alliance
In November 2024, Claudio published an op-ed in Devex — one of the most widely read publications in international development — arguing that the sector's resistance to sustainable financing is fundamentally an attitude problem, not a competence problem. The piece was featured in the Devex Newswire, reaching over one million subscribers.
That thesis became a movement.
I persuaded InterAction — the largest alliance of US-based international NGOs — to co-organize and host an invitation-only convening on April 14, 2026, during the World Bank and IMF Spring Meetings in Washington, DC. The room includes C-suite leaders from FHI 360, Mercy Corps, PSI, International Medical Corps, Counterpart International, IFC, and more.
A white paper drawing on the convening's findings is planned for Fall 2026 and will be distributed through the InterAction network at the sector's flagship annual gathering.
In parallel, I launched the Beyond Grants podcast, interviewing practitioners who have already made the shift — NGO leaders, impact investors, and corporate partnership executives sharing what they actually did, what failed, and what's replicable. My knowledge base grows with every conversation.
